Florida is lucky to not have the harsh winters that many northern states have. So, it’s not necessary to winterize your Florida lawn the way people up north have to winterize their lawns. However, we do have cold snaps and occasional freezes during the winter months. How to Care for Your Florida Lawn During the Winter It’s important to be prepared for those cold snaps and know how to care for your Florida lawn during the winter.
1. Winterize your irrigation system –
Despite our warmer and more mild winters, in most parts of Florida, you still need to winterize your irrigation system. This is because we do have those periodic cold snaps and freezes. You don’t want water sitting in your irrigation system’s pipes during such a cold snap because your pipes can freeze and burst. Repairing a burst pipe (or several of them) in your irrigation system is expensive and messy because the pipes have to be dug up and replaced. Save yourself the stress and expense by having your irrigation system winterized and water blown out.
2. Watch for weeds –
Weeds can grow any time of year – even in the winter. Weeds are hardier than many types of grasses and can continue to crop up or grow even when it’s colder out. Keep an eye out for weeds and be sure to treat them or pull them whenever you see them. This way, they don’t get a stronghold in your lawn that will be harder and more difficult to deal with come spring.
3. Keep leaves raked –
While most leaves should be done falling by the time December hits, there might still be some leaves that can fall well into January. Keep on top of raking leaves and keeping your grass clear of leafy debris. Wet patches of leaves can support the development of rot and also disease in your lawn. So keep the leaves picked up and keep your lawn healthy and ready for spring.
4. Mow as needed –
Because Florida is in a temperate sub-tropical region, we do have warm spells during the winter as well as cold snaps. During warm spells, dormant grasses can start growing again in response to the increase in temperature. It’s important to monitor your grass growth and mow during the winter as needed. This will keep your grass from getting too long and then becoming damaged when the next cold snap or freeze hits.
Follow these four steps to caring for your Florida lawn in the winter and you’ll keep your grass primed and ready for a healthy spring growth season. Need help maintaining your Florida lawn?
