Hot summer temperatures, high humidity and the blazing sun can do a number on your lawn. Taking care of your lawn properly is the key to a great looking lawn all summer long. Here are the best summer care tips for your Florida Lawn.
1. Know Your Grass Type – The first step to having a healthy lawn is knowing what type of grass you have. In Florida, the most common types of grass are St. Augustine, Bermuda, Bahia, Centipede and Zoysia. Each type of grass has different watering, fertilizing and mowing needs.
2. Water Properly – Watering your lawn correctly is crucial to keeping it healthy during the summer months. Depending on your grass type, you will need to water anywhere from 1-3 times per week. Be sure not to water between 10AM and 4PM as this water will evaporate in the heat before it gets to grass roots. Keep rainy days in mind too when calculating when and how much to water your lawn.
3. Look for Pests – Pests can do a lot of damage to your lawn if they are not taken care of properly. Be on the lookout for chinch bugs, sod webworms, armyworms and mole crickets, as these are common pests in Florida lawns. If you see any damage or insects, be sure to contact a us for treatment options.
4. Watch for Weeds – Weeds can also take a toll on your lawn if they are not removed. Hand-pulling small weeds is usually the best option, but you may need to use an herbicide for larger patches. Be careful when using herbicides though, as they can damage your grass if not used correctly.
5. Mow to the Right Height – Mowing your lawn too short can stress the grass and damage the root system, leaving it susceptible to scorching and disease. Most types of grass should be 2 to 3 inches high after mowing. Quick tip – keep your mower blades sharp to avoid tearing and damaging grass.
